“How much does a website cost?” is probably the question web developers hear most often. The honest answer is: it depends. But that doesn’t mean the price can’t be estimated in advance. In this article we look at what the price of a website really consists of, why quotes can differ tenfold and how to choose a partner whose price is fair.
What is the price of a website made of?
Every website project can be split into five parts. The more of them the developer does for you, the higher the price – and the less work is left for you.
1. Planning and structure
Before design, you need to decide which pages are needed, what visitors should do and which keywords people use to find you. This is often missing from cheaper quotes, yet it determines whether the site generates enquiries.
2. Design
A ready-made template is cheap and fast, but your site looks like thousands of others. A custom design takes more time but reflects your brand and is built around your content.
3. Copy and images
Many companies underestimate this part. Good, SEO-aware, persuasive copy is often the main reason a new site brings in more customers than the old one. If you write the copy yourself, the price is lower – but factor in your own time.
4. Development and features
A simple brochure site is cheaper than one with bookings, multiple languages, a price calculator, a customer portal or a CRM integration. Every feature adds development and testing time.
5. Technical SEO, speed and security
Speed, metadata, structured data, redirects from the old site and security settings. They are not visible to the eye, but they decide whether Google finds you.
Why do quotes differ so much?
If you get three quotes – €600, €2,500 and €7,000 – it doesn’t mean anyone is cheating. Usually they are offering different things:
- The cheapest quote is often a template site where you add the copy and images. Fine if you simply need a business card on the internet.
- The mid-range quote usually includes a custom design, basic SEO and help with copy.
- The more expensive quote includes strategy, unique design, professional copywriting, extra features, thorough SEO and often support after launch.
Ask every provider the same list of questions – then you’ll see what you’re really paying for.
10 questions to ask a provider
- Is the design custom or based on a template?
- Who writes the copy, and is it SEO-aware?
- Can I edit the content myself, and will you train me?
- Who owns the domain, hosting and code?
- Will old URLs be redirected so I keep my Google rankings?
- How fast is the site on mobile (e.g. PageSpeed score)?
- Is the price fixed? What happens if I want changes?
- What is included after launch (support, fixes)?
- How much do maintenance and hosting cost per month?
- Can you show similar work and results?
Hidden costs to consider
The price of building a website isn’t the only cost. Also consider:
- Domain and hosting – an annual or monthly fee.
- Paid plugins or licences – for example certain forms, e-commerce add-ons or stock photo libraries.
- Maintenance – WordPress and plugin updates, backups and security. An unmaintained site is a security risk.
- Content updates and SEO – a site that isn’t updated loses rankings over time.
How not to overpay (or underpay)?
The biggest mistake isn’t an overly expensive site, but a site that doesn’t achieve its goal. An €800 site that brings in no enquiries is more expensive than a €3,000 site that brings in new customers every month.
- Write down your goal: how many enquiries or sales per month do you want?
- Start with what you need – extra features can be added later if the site is built to be extensible.
- Insist on a fixed price and a written scope.
- Make sure ownership stays with you.
