WordPress 7.2 Arrives on 8 December: What Website Owners Should Know Before Updating

WordPress 7.2 is due on 8 December and its beta is already out for testing. Here is what changes, what it means for a typical business website or online store and how to update safely.

WordPress 7.2 Arrives on 8 December: What Website Owners Should Know Before Updating
In shortWordPress 7.2 is scheduled for 8 December 2026 and is the last major release of the year. Most of the new features concern the block editor, but there are important changes for Elementor and WooCommerce site owners too: image processing in the browser, a faster admin and a new way to store passwords and API keys securely. Do not install a major update on day one – test it first.

WordPress publishes several major versions a year, with smaller maintenance and security releases in between. Minor releases, like 7.1.1–7.1.3 in September and October, fix bugs and security holes and should be installed quickly. A major version brings new features and changes that can affect themes and plugins, so it is worth testing first.

Information as of 21 October 2026, based on the beta. Details may change in the final release – see the official WordPress announcements for the latest information.

Timeline

  • 20 October 2026 – first beta (for testing, not for live sites).
  • 17 November 2026 – release candidate (RC1).
  • 8 December 2026 – final release of WordPress 7.2.

What changes for website owners?

Images are processed in the browser

The Media Library can now resize, compress and convert images to modern formats in the browser before uploading. This reduces server load and helps keep images lighter – which in turn affects page speed. If the browser does not support it, the work is done on the server as before. If you already use an image optimisation plugin, check after the update that images are not processed twice.

A faster admin

Admin scripts and styles are now loaded as separate files, which makes better use of the browser cache, and WordPress prefetches the screen you are likely to open next. The admin icons have also been updated. In everyday use the admin should feel a little faster.

A safer way to store API keys

The new Secrets API gives plugins a standard, secure way to store sensitive data – such as API keys for payment providers, couriers or email services – encrypted. For online stores this is an important step: today every plugin stores such keys in its own way. The benefit only arrives once plugins adopt it, though.

Stricter HTML processing

WordPress is tightening its HTML processing and rebuilding the content sanitisation function that strips out dangerous code. That is good for security, but it may affect older plugins or customisations that inject scripts or styles into content. Changes like this are exactly why a major update is worth testing first.

Block editor and new theme updates

If your site is built with the block editor (Gutenberg), you get many new design options: separate settings for different screen sizes (such as the number of gallery columns on mobile), text shadow, styling form elements in Global Styles and managing menus in the Site Editor. The new default theme, Ipsum, is a simple blog theme whose style variations all meet the WCAG AA accessibility level. Sites built with Elementor are not directly affected by these changes.

What does it mean for Elementor and WooCommerce sites?

The Elementor and WooCommerce developers usually test their plugins against the new version during the beta and release compatibility updates where needed. The biggest risk is usually not WordPress itself but an older or rarely updated plugin that has not been adapted to the new version. So:

  • do not install the major update on the first day – wait a few days or a week until plugins release compatibility updates;
  • update your plugins and theme to the latest version before updating WordPress;
  • for an online store, test the whole purchase journey after updating: product, cart, checkout and payment.

PHP version

Since WordPress 7.0 the minimum supported PHP version is 7.4 and the recommended version is 8.3. If your hosting still runs an old PHP version, review it before the major update – newer PHP is faster and receives security updates. You can see your PHP version in the WordPress admin under Tools → Site Health → Info.

Checklist before updating to WordPress 7.2

  1. Check that you are on the latest 7.1.x release – the September and October security updates must be installed.
  2. Make a fresh backup of both files and the database and keep it off the server.
  3. Update plugins and the theme and remove the ones you do not use.
  4. Check whether major updates are set to install automatically on your site (Dashboard → Updates) and decide whether you want to test them manually first.
  5. If possible, test the update first in a staging environment, i.e. a copy of your website.
  6. After updating, check your key pages, forms and the store’s purchase journey.

Summary

WordPress 7.2 is an evolutionary rather than a revolutionary update: more design options in the block editor, a faster admin, smarter image processing and better security tools. The biggest risk is older plugins, so plan the update carefully. Frequently asked questions

When will WordPress 7.2 be released?

It is scheduled for 8 December 2026. The first beta was published on 20 October and the release candidate is planned for 17 November.

Should I update to WordPress 7.2 straight away?

Minor security releases should be installed immediately, but for a major version it makes sense to wait a few days, update your plugins first, make a backup and, if possible, test the update on a copy of your website.

Does WordPress 7.2 work with Elementor?

Elementor and WooCommerce usually test their plugins against the new version during the beta. Update these plugins to the latest version before updating WordPress and check your key pages afterwards.
